Plastic Resource Reclamation Declaration
Plastic Resource Reclamation Declaration
The JSDA (Japan Soft Drink Association), as the beverage industry, is promoting a comprehensive plastic circulation by endorsing the 3R principle in resource utilization and further improvements of collection efforts, while considering the aspects of food safety, technical feasibility, and economic performance, based on The 4th Fundamental Plan for Establishing a Sound Material-Cycle Society (June 19, 2018, cabinet council decision), to achieve a sustainable society by addressing various issues, such as resource and waste constraints and marine plastic pollution.
Basic concepts of plastic resource circulation strategy in the soft drink industry
- Endorse the use of environmentally-friendly designs that consider environmental impacts while maintaining the functionality of the container.
- Collaborate with related organizations to minimize costs and maximize the effective utilization of resources, work on a sustainable recycling system, and optimize and promote the collection and recycling of used resources.
- Promote the widespread use of recycled materials (e.g. bottle to bottle) in the industry to contribute to the resource circulation cycle that can grow sustainably.
- Engage in awareness raising activities for consumers, such as further promoting town beautification, environmental movements, littering prevention, as well as the active use of products made from recycled materials.
Declaration of Plastic Resources Recycling by the Soft Drinks Industry(November 29, 2018)
Based on the “Basic concepts of plastic resource circulation in the soft drink industry”, considering waste pollution in land and marine areas, and in cooperation with customers, governments, local governments, related organizations, the soft drink industry declares to achieve a 100% effective utilization of PET bottles by FY 2030, to set the short-term, medium-term, and long-term plans and to conduct serious efforts in plastic resource circulation.
The directions of short-, medium-, and long-term activities based on the declaration of plastic resource circulation in the soft drink industry
Short term
(Fiscal year 2019 G20 summit Formulation of National Plastic Resources Circulation Strategy 2020 Tokyo Olympic and Paralympic Games)
- Reinforcement of awareness raising and promotion activities as an industry that is connected to national movements
- Accomplish the Third Voluntary Action Plan in cooperation with the 3R Promotion Council: more than 85% recycling and 25% waste reduction (compared to fiscal 2004) in fiscal year 2020
- Recycle education on empty-container recycling boxes for vending machines and strengthen the efforts for the efficient collection of recycled items
- Strengthen the collaboration with stakeholders, such as environmental NGOs
- Organize the issues and promote the widespread use of recycled materials (e.g. bottle to bottle)
- Provide recommendations to use alternative materials (e.g. biomass plastics)
Medium Term
(Fiscal year 2025 Year to reach the targets of the 4th Fundamental Plan for Establishing a Sound Material-Cycle Society)
- Construction of more efficient collection systems through collaborations with the national and local governments
- Appeal for the reinforcement of the regulations to prevent littering
- Promote an active utilization of recycled and alternative materials
Long Term
(Fiscal year 2030 SDGs goals)
- The stance and efforts of the industry aiming at 100% effective utilization of PET bottles
- Show the value and foundation of Japan’s world-class recovery and recycling systems in a quantitative and scientific approach.
